Software Liberty Association Taiwan

SLAT is a non-profit association aiming to promote Free and Libre Open Source Software (FLOSS) and Software Liberation Movement in Taiwan.

These years we have focused on the following policies:

• Promote and help Taiwanese government agencies to adopt Open Document Format.
• Promote "Public Money Public Code" policies in Taiwan.
• Promote FLOSS in Taiwan's school.

... and many other FLOSS-related topics.

Software Liberation Movement

There are three aspects in "Software Liberation Movement":

• Software liberation: Software should be tools for people to use, but most people become slaves of (big proprietary) software. Without those vendor locked-in software applications most people have no idea about how to solve their problems. Software liberation aims to tell people that they have choices, and they should have the ability to choose software tools under different situations.
• Document liberation: Documents should be exchanged with open and standard format so that people will not be locked by certain software. For example, Open Document Format (ODF) is an open and international standard format (ISO/IEC 26300). Following this spec properly people can exchange documents without needing to taking care of software application and versions. An ODF file generated by LibreOffice 7.2 can be opened easily by old LibreOffice 4.4 without any problem (though in LibreOffice 4.4 some features like OpenPGP signatures may not be available but it can still open the document and read the data/contents without any problem.) Therefore people don't need to worry about the version of software tools (e.g. LibreOffice) too old to open documents from others. That's something Microsoft Office (and its format) could never promise.
• Digital liberation: We all use different services on the Internet now. However not many people are aware of their accounts and data being held and controlled by big unicorns like Google, Facebook and so on. By promoting Software Liberation Movement we tell people about the risk of this, and tell them what can and what shouldn't be put or shared on public cloud service like Google Drive, One Drive, Dropbox, and so on. We also provide private cloud services as examples to tell people that they can enjoy the convenience of cloud services while keeping their privacy and data.
